Apple’s latest iPhone software update, iOS 26, introduces a wave of customization options for users, focusing significantly on enhancing the lock screen interface. Alongside revamped visuals and new gesture controls, users can now reshape their iPhone experience directly from the lock screen.
To access lock screen settings, users must lock their device, then tap and hold the screen until the "Customize" button appears. This interface leads to several new personalization tools.
Users can now tap on the date to add single-line widgets, which vary based on installed apps. Common widgets include weather updates, calendar events, and reminders. The clock widget has received a notable update, with iOS 26 allowing users to resize the clock dynamically via a drag handle on the lower right.
Previously located at the top, the widget area now appears at the bottom of the screen. By tapping "Add Widgets," users can incorporate indicators like battery status, world clocks, step counters, and more.
Two new buttons above the widget bar allow toggling wallpaper depth effects—particularly effective with Spatial Photos—and choosing between dark mode, light mode, or syncing with system preferences.
Shortcuts on the lower corners of the lock screen can now be customized. Users can remove existing options with the minus symbol and replace them with quick links to frequently used apps or tools, such as playlists, timers, or stopwatches.
iOS 26 permits the creation of multiple lock screens. Swiping sideways on the Customize screen allows users to switch between different layouts. New lock screens can be set up using the "+" icon, starting with wallpaper selection. Choices include emoji patterns, gradient colors, personal photos, or slideshow formats.
Each lock screen can be tied to a specific Focus mode—for instance, one for work hours, another for nighttime use. The "Focus" option appears atop each lock screen preview, enabling seamless automation.
In "Display & Brightness" settings, users can manage lock behavior with the Auto-Lock and Raise to Wake options. Devices from the iPhone 14 Pro series onward gain access to Always On Display, which keeps select information—like wallpaper or alerts—visible while conserving battery life.
Users can also control how notifications appear. The "Show Previews" option, located under "Notifications" in settings, allows previews to be hidden for privacy.
An added visual feature includes full-screen animated album art for certain Apple Music tracks. When tapping the lock screen media player, supported songs will display the album art in an immersive format.
